For example, from the Linux prompt you can start IDL like this: idlde -IDL_GR_X_RENDERER 1 or idl -IDL_GR_X_RENDERER 1 Or you can change this from inside IDL Workbench, by going to Some googling lead me to believe that it is a Xinerama/NVidia multi-monitor problem unrelated to my app. –dargaud Sep 12 '14 at 9:00 Removing Xinerama didn't help. The only update I can do is that this freeze happens randomly indipendently about what I'm doing.. This sounds like an OS issue. To know which branch you need, simply install nvidia-detect from elrepo and run it.

Part of the problem is that it does not generate a core file, although it should. Would it make sense to downgrade to an ancient version of thunderbird? Do you have a tip for me, how to do it?

Xorg.log says that loading nvidia failed, and I should check my kernel log. I wrote a C program that crashes after a few days of use. What is the difference? In the end I traced the problem down to a place where the function sending the events to the window to redraw it was called by multiple threads, without a mutex
I assumed I was doing something wrong, but since glxgears and glxdemo also produce a SEGV signal, maybe my program just handles it less gracefully. Further more I booted the liveDVD - and now the crash appears there too I compared it's Xorg.conf with mine, and they are quite the same - expect some different paths. I have several Gtk::Image objects on my window. By the way Compiz is running cool. Searching for it on the web leads to widely scattered problems, none of which seem relevant. It runs fine one time - and after a while it crashes now like thunderbird.
I first installed Ubuntu from an USB-Stick on my SSD, now I repeated it with an DVD on a regular HDD - on both the the same error. The screen goes black. The program runs unnatended so it's not an issue of 'it crashes when I do that'. The crash still happens without Xinerama.
Isn't that more expensive than an elevated system?
