Mdadm Start Array
The subject platform is a PC running FC5 (Fedora Core 5, patched latest) with eight 400gb SATA drives (/dev/sd[b-i]1) assembled into a RAID6 md0 device. Its telling you that you can't add a 5th drive to an array in a degraded state. I was able to start the array, for reading at least. (baby steps...) Mdadm Start Array
As I understand it, mdadm --run should start the array even if there is one disk missing; there are still 3 of the original 4 disks present so it should be Join Date Nov 2006 Posts 4 Backup successful! Any more tips on how to interpret the unhelpful log messages? :-/ looks like the issue is that "cannot start dirty degraded array" Looks more like a moral problem, doesn't it?

You need to tell mdadm to remove a drive from the md before you add the new one. I mean... Yet trying to fail the device... On reboot, mdadm showed that the array was resyncing; that seems to have completed but still no luck in accessing /home.
It's moving kinda slow right now, probably because I'm also doing an fsck. You still have your /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf file in place?
Next I added /dev/sdc as a spare, Code: excession# mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sdc mdadm: added /dev/sdc And then saw that it was happily rebuilding the data on that disk, Code: excession# When your raid array has failed, and you are tempted to run mdadm --create, then STOP. md: pers->run() failed... Must be active md2 to can be mounted?
